Live Business Audit: How to Grow a Niche E-Commerce Brand
But you probably don’t need this. You’ve already mastered e-commerce, right?
A buddy of mine runs a niche e-commerce store. Super-specific DIY product. Clear audience. The problem? They weren’t sure how to scale.
So they asked me:
How do we sell more?
What’s missing from our marketing?
Where should we focus?
Classic questions. Obvious answers, right? I took a deep dive anyway. Here’s what I found, plus a few ways to grow their business, assuming you don’t already know all this.
Step 1: The Investigation
Like a detective, but for online sales (and with less trench coat drama), I broke it down into five key areas.
Product Selection. Selling the right stuff? Any room to expand?
Market Size & Demand. How big is the audience? Do they even care?
Distribution Channels. Are they selling in the right places, or just hoping customers magically find them?
Marketing Strategy. What’s driving traffic? What’s missing? (Hint: something always is.)
Competitor Analysis. What are others doing better, and how fast can we “borrow” those ideas?
Step 2: The Growth Plan
1. Expand the Product Line
Right now, they sell a few kits. Cool, but what if they offered different versions? More landmarks, different skill levels, collector’s editions.
More SKUs means more sales. Basic math.
2. Content That Sells
People don’t just buy products. They buy the story behind them. So tell one.
Videos & Tutorials. Actually show how to use the thing. Preferably without being boring.
Blog Content. “How to Introduce Kids to Building” is the kind of thing parents eat up.
Social Proof. If customers post pictures, let them do the selling for you.
3. Find the Right Sales Channels
Selling only on their website?
Meanwhile, competitors are chilling on Amazon, Etsy, and even in retail stores.
Amazon alone has built-in search traffic. If people are already looking for this kind of product, why make them work harder to find it?
4. Paid Ads & Influencers
Their ideal customers live on Instagram. Maybe instead of just scrolling, they could buy something.
And influencers? A goldmine. Send a few free kits to bloggers, TikTokers, or YouTubers. Chances are, they’ll talk about it. Free organic traffic beats begging people to visit your site.
Step 3: Takeaways for SMBs & Side Hustlers
Even if you’re in a niche, there’s always room to grow. Unless you prefer staying small. Totally your call.
More products = more revenue. Simple. Sell more things, make more money.
Content sells. Show, don’t tell. Or just yell louder. Your choice.
Expand distribution. Sell where people already shop.
Paid + influencers = scale. Instagram ads plus trusted creators equals money.
